Art Exhibit: "Chicanitas, small paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection" Mon-Fri 9am-5pm. Staniar Gallery, Wilson Hall, W&L University. FREE! 540-458-8000.
Since the 1960s, artistic expression has been an important agent of political activism for the Mexican-American community, its members marginalized by both law and custom in the United States. As Chicano artists garnered public attention and respect, their works have moved from the peripheries of the art world to more traditional museum and gallery spaces while continuing to embrace themes of heritage, legacy and community. This exhibition features paintings by both emerging and established artists from Cheech Marin's noted collection of Chicano art. Marin, the entertainer who is well known for his work in movies, television, and improvisational comedy, has been acquiring art for more than 20 years and has amassed one of the most renowned collections of Chicano art in private hands. |

Water inspires. Water symbolizes life and mystery, hope and truth - maybe even magic. It can be willful or calm. Whether in awe of its power and strength or overwhelmed by a vast expanse of still beauty, open water draws artists of all mediums to create. In the exhibition Open Water, my aim was to select images that have a depth of feeling and power – whether bold or subtle... -Juror's Statement |
